Chou à la Clem Art.

Chou à la Clem is a French artist who really impressed us, especially for the way she mixes fashion and witchcraft in her BEAUTIFUL drawings!
Her drawings are like her name: sweet, lovely... but powerful (like heavy metal! We also love it!). Find more about this girl who loves magic, cats and girl power here:

Q: Hi! Tell us something about you.

A: Hi guys ! My name is Clémence, but I'm working in the Internet shadows with the code name of Chou à la Clem (which is basically a bad joke between my surname and a pastry name...).
In the real life, I'm a french graphic design student based in Nantes (France), but I also studied fashion marketing in UK for a little while.
My main interests in life are of course graphic design and illustration, but also fashion and heavy metal. And cats. And pizza.

Q: How do you feel about your art? How would you describe it?

A: I wouldn't call myself an artist or an illustrator yet because I'm still learning (I guess we all do during our whole life, but self-teaching and studies... ya know what I mean). As you can see, I'm not a very self-confident person, uh. But I think my art in general is a mix between my graphic design skills and my passion for illustration. My heart always balanced between both. Otherwise, people sometimes use to tell me that my female characters convey something strong. I like the idea.

Q:What would you like to express with you works?

A: As you can guess from my previous answer, I really like to draw strong and badass female characters. Feminism and girl power are something I want to convey through my drawings.
But talking more generally, when I draw a full illustration, I often try to put a message and a story behind it throught little details and (long) captions. I have issues to draw "just to draw", without intellectualize everything haha. And I feel so happy when somebody comments on my work saying they understood my message, or they were able to imagine a story with it !

Q:  Was there a moment in your life that deeply influenced your way of being an artist?

A: Well, my mom is a graphic designer and an illustrator herself. So I assume she has something to do with all that arty stuff in me.
But I believe that my early teen years were an important part of my "artist life" (If I can call it like that). That's when I really started to draw seriously.
I was what psychologists call a "precocious child" : I was in school with people all several years older than me, I was lonely and hypersensitive, with the head full of ideas and emotions.
I guess drawing and playing music became a way to evacuate all of that, to not explode, and eventually change it into stories.

Q: What does inspire you? where do you take your inspiration from?

A: As I mentioned before, strong women and girl power stuff is a thing I clearly like to draw. But in a more general way, I'm very inspired by vintage vibes and past american glory. I'm also interested in magic, esoterism and witchcraft, anything about other cultures (native american, nordic, arabian, african...) and... well I grew up with mangas and animes so Japanese culture has a good position in my Top 10 inspirations.

Q: What kind of technique do you use and which is your favourite to work with?

A: I may use watercolor, ink or color pencil sometimes, but my main tools are my Wacom tablet and Photoshop. Drawing digitally allow you to do more experimentations with the possibility to go back to the previous version if you do a mistake, so this is very convenient.
However, when I just need to relax, I prefer to grab a pencil and draw on the paper of my sketchbook : it feels way more natural to me.

Q: Any last word for your fans?

A: I hope I didn't bore you too much. Thanks to anybody who support me and take the time to look at my work ! A big thanks to Scar and Scarlett for this interview (Oh and I freakin love your style by the way !).
